Mathare celebrates their women in style!

The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation feel that 'all the battles have been won for women' while many feminists from the 1970's know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy.

With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality.

Therefore, on 8th March of every year, the whole world celebrates International Womens Day.The celebrations were culminated on March 8th, 2023 at Kiboro grounds in Mathare. The day was marked with various activities including: women football, dubbed soccer for gender equality played by mama mboga against the police and football clubs like msalaba starlets against Onyango all stars. There was also a processing led by the Mathare North Adventist band from T-Area in Utalii ward to Kiboro grounds via the Maumau road, entertainment from various groups, games that brought about winners for safaricom airtime, speeches from invited guests

As a result of the event the following outcomes were achieved: Gender Justice and equality messages and a call to come together as a community to conserve women’s rights were well sent out to the public, all the HRDs, CSOs and CBOS together with the community came together and partnered in celebrating the grassroot women, partnership with the community brought about a sense of responsibility and ownership in matters concerning women’s rights. Scores of participants also got to know their HIV Status, got cervical screening for free courtesy of AHF, free counselling and psycho-social support courtesy of Amani Counselling centre, Legal aid clinic on S.G.B.V courtesy of Crime Si Poa.
