International Youth Day

Background information

The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in youth and green skills.

Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World’ was chosen as the theme for International Youth Day in 2023. The United Nations believed that this transformation towards a future that is both ecologically sustainable and climate-friendly is of utmost importance. It is crucial to achieve the objectives listed in the Sustainable Development Agenda as well as an immediate response to the urgent global climate catastrophe

For this transition to a greener world to be successful, ‘green skills’ must be developed among the people. The term green skills refers to a broad variety of knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and values necessary to advance a society that is resource-efficient and sustainable.

Learning green skills is beneficial for individuals of all ages, but younger generations in particular are more in need of them since they have more time to contribute to the shift to a more sustainable future. In this line, MPI- KENYA in conjunction with other partners reiterated on the green skills and peaceful co-existence among the youths.

This event brought together youths, representatives from Nairobi City County and different Organizations to commemorate the IYD 2023.

The theme for this year was ‘‘Green skills for youths for sustainable development’’ Therefore, in line with the theme different activities took place on 12th August, 2023 at flats area in Mathare constituency and also during the build up activities. The purpose of commemorating the day was to empower the youths with green skills to be self dependent. The day was marked with various activities including: procession, clean-up and dialogues.

As a result of the event the following outcomes were achieved: Sufficient information on what youths can do to be self-reliant, importance of taking care of the environment, knowing the issues affecting the youths and finally gained knowledge through digital literacy as youths were taken through the AJIRA platform which is an initiative focusing on creating an environment for work generation and skills development to meet the demand and supply side on job creation.
