Mathare Peace Initiative-Kenya (MPI Kenya) is a local organization working in Nairobi and its environs and the coordination of its activities are conducted from Mathare Vocational Training Centre where the organization's offices are located.

History of MPIKenya

Mathare Peace Initiative Kenya (MPI Kenya) is a grassroots organization based in Mathare, Nairobi, dedicated to promoting peace, conflict transformation, human rights, social cohesion, and community empowerment. The organization was established by young people in 2012 in response to election-related violence and human-rights violations and was formally registered as a local organization in 2014. Since then, MPI Kenya has worked with vulnerable and marginalized communities, including youth, women, persons with disabilities, older people, migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons. Its work has expanded to include peacebuilding, civic engagement, environmental initiatives, livelihoods, and capacity building, with the overall aim of building peaceful, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities.

Computer Classes

The program has also made linkages and referrals of the project beneficiaries to further training opportunities. Further, based on the emerging needs and community feedback, the project has incorporated business mentorships, life skills & and photography training.

Mentorship Skills

The project has initiated the establishment of the first accessible Green Innovation Hub in Mathare that caters for the needs of displaced populations – refugees, migrants and internally displaced populations; alongside the host community. The hub is well equipped with computers and has been used for its skills development and literacy programs.
